I'm convinced we're governed by idiots.

In an effort to regulate box fill, it was decided that a 14 gauge wire required 1.5 cubic inches, and a 12 gauge wire required 2 cubic inches, etc. They don't actually need exactly that much space. It was just a convenient number that gave the inspectors a definite rule that allowed them to reject over-filled boxes; and, numbers like 1.5 and 2 are easy for electricians to work with.

Then, along came metric measurements, and the current bunch of CSA idiots. Now, a 14 gauge wire requires 24.6 millilitres and a 12 gauge wire requires 28.7 millilitres.

My point is, we aren't doing anything differently than we did before. It's just that now we need a calculator to do the same thing.

Doesn't it bother anyone that CSA is f***ing up a perfectly good set of rules?

Twh, I believe you are right about that. They are trying to legislate things that should be common sense. Some individuals can safely connect ten #12 wires in a 4" X 2 1/8" octagon box and others would create a hazard.

Another "unworkable" rule is 12-3038 for pullboxes, and you can probably think of others.
